Never Trust a Flying Squirrel
Flying Explorers Series — Book 3
The Next Step — When Rules Aren’t Enough
By now, Tamias understands that flying follows rules. What he begins to discover is that rules alone are not enough. Real flight demands judgment, and judgment cannot be memorized. It has to be built, tested, and sometimes corrected the hard way.
What This Book Teaches
This stage of training focuses on decision-making in aviation. It explores how pilots evaluate risk, when to trust information, and when to question it. It shows how quickly situations can change and why good judgment matters more than perfect knowledge. The emphasis shifts from following procedures to understanding when those procedures must be adapted to reality.
The Story
At Toad University, training continues, but something has changed. The lessons are no longer clean or predictable. Not every situation comes with clear instructions, and not every voice should be trusted. As Tamias moves deeper into his training, he begins to encounter moments where choices carry real consequences. The sky is still a system, but now it is a system that requires interpretation.
Who This Is For
This book is written for readers who already understand the basics of flight and want to understand how real pilots think. It is for students preparing for flight training, for developing pilots building decision-making skills, and for readers who want a realistic view of how judgment shapes aviation outcomes.
Why This Book Is Different
Most aviation material explains what to do. This book focuses on how to decide. It presents scenarios where the correct answer is not obvious and shows how experienced thinking develops over time. The goal is not just to inform, but to build the mental framework that supports safe and effective flying.
Series Context
This is Book 3 of The Flying Explorers Series. It follows The Sky Has Rules and represents the transition from structured training into real-world decision-making, where trust, judgment, and experience begin to define the pilot.
Formats Available
This title is available in Standard Paperback for everyday reading, a Full Color Paperback edition with enhanced visual presentation, a Full Color Hardcover Library Edition designed for durability and institutional quality, and a Full Color Author Signed Hardcover for collectors and dedicated readers. Each format contains the same core content, with differences in materials, presentation, and collectibility.
I had the chance to pre-read the first three books in the series, and this one was a standout for me. It’s funny, sweet, and surprisingly thoughtful. The story works great on its own, but I also appreciated how the author weaves real aviation ideas into the narrative without slowing anything down.
And that ending caught me completely off guard.
If you like smart kids’ books (or aviation), this one is a great read.
