This book has more movement and personality than I expected from a math-centered story. The rhythm of the writing mirrors the rhythm in the plot, and it keeps everything feeling lively without losing focus. The dam and clam elements are clever, but it’s the “jams” that really elevate it. My son kept flipping back to certain sections because he liked how they sounded when read aloud. That doesn’t happen often. It’s energetic, imaginative, and still anchored in real thinking. A strong five stars from our house.
I picked up Dams, Clams, and Cricket Jams expecting a fun math story. I did not expect to have parts of it stuck in my head days later. The way the music is woven into the story is handled surprisingly well — it never feels forced or gimmicky. Instead, it reinforces the patterns and structure the characters are discovering. My kids were humming while talking about ratios. Ratios. That shouldn’t be possible, but here we are. It’s playful without being chaotic and clever without being heavy-handed. Easily one of our favorites in the series.
What makes these books shine is the back material. You can read it as a story, read it aloud, but then when you look at the appendix stuff it really hits home. Great job. I learned a thing or two myself.
